It's difficult to say exactly when the guitar was invented because it really just evolved from other early stringed instruments. However instruments that somewhat resemble the guitar we recognize today can be traced as far back as 5,000 years ago.
The flamenco guitar is stunning if you want some latin passion. Orginally it was used to accompany the singers and dancers however it's just as amazing as a solo instrument. Because it was originally designed to be played with singers and dancers, the flamenco guitar needed to be loud enough to hear and therefore was designed in a particular way to give projection of the sound. This is was long before the electric amp of course.
You can also hear the relationship between the flamenco guitar and the Gypsy jazz guitar. Music never stays the same for long and is always evolving. Django Reinhardt is perhaps the king of gypsy guitar despite the fact he was in a fire that damaged his hands. Long after his death, guitarists of today still idolize him and long to copy his style yet never quite manage to.
Blues of course is fairly new style of music and was born of the black slaves that were taken to America to work. These slaves sang in order to pass the time and get through their really harsh lives. Over the years, the blues has developed as it has travelled north throughout the States. Combine this with electric guitars and you have something quite different from the early blues. The heroes of blues guitar include BB King, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. There are of course too many to name however they still inspire people to buy an electric guitar and start playing.
